“When Carrie and I first decided to get married we couldn’t come up with a venue for our wedding. We knew we wanted a civil ceremony because we are both of different religious denominations, but our local registry office is not the most inspiring place to celebrate such an important day of our lives together.
Some friends had just spent a holiday in Cyprus and were raving about how great it was. So we checked the Cyprus Tourism Organisation’s website. With so many wedding options it didn’t take long for us to decide that this was what we really wanted to do. Our travel agent suggested we get in touch with a wedding planner in Cyprus, which is what we did and from then on everything quickly started falling into place. They were so helpful and friendly.
The town of Limassol was our choice. It has great hotels, lots of entertainment and miles of beautiful beaches. Much of the town is quite new but it has a lovely ‘old world’ centre with narrow winding streets and a medieval castle, where they say the English King, Richard the Lionheart, married Queen Berengaria way back in 1191. It’s also the centre of the island’s wine-making industry – something we both looked forward to checking out!
We were surprised at how many of our friends and family decided to come and help celebrate our wedding. Some even stayed in Cyprus for several days after the wedding to enjoy a holiday in the sun.
After the marriage ceremony, we celebrated on board a fabulous catamaran, which sailed along the coast. It was like a dream come true, with all our friends, glorious sunshine, champagne and unbelievable food. Our wedding planners had even organised the cake.
The other good thing was that we still had a couple of weeks to enjoy our honeymoon. We hired a car and explored the island. We spent time on the beach and had a go at water skiing. We went walking in the mountains and visited some great wineries – the traditional wine village of Omodos was particularly memorable. We even found time to relax in the hotel spa and really enjoyed being pampered. But most of all we enjoyed the company of all the friendly people we met. As soon as anyone heard we were newlyweds nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to make sure we had a good time.
By the time we returned home we were tanned and relaxed… we even joked about getting a divorce so we could go back and do it all again!
Thank you Cyprus, we’ll be recommending you to all the friends we know that want to get married. That way we get to come back as their guests.”
